Well, what a weekend that was. On Friday evening I went to The Savoy in London to watch the west end version of Dreamgirls. WHAT a show! It’s such a privilege to see such talented dancers/actors/singers up there on the stage doing what they were born to do. The vocal performances were the best I’ve ever witnessed and it really stirred something inside me. When I see successful people in any discipline (sport, music, art, business to name a few) I always feel an immense sense of inspiration. I wonder how many years it was their dream? I wonder how many hours they practised? I wonder how many times they were rejected? I wonder how much money they invested to get there? I’ve recently been reading ‘Outliers: The Story of Success’ by Malcolm Gladwell to understand just how and why some people succeed whilst others don’t. He believes it’s the people who are intensively focused on their area of expertise that make them the most successful people above their peers. He believes that much of Britain’s Olympic success is down to a combination of natural ability but, most importantly, unwavering dedication. Whilst I don’t recommend that you waste too much time looking at other people in your industry I do think it’s important to recognise what other successful people are doing and how they got there. In my opinion success comes hand in hand with MINDSET. I’m asked all the time – ‘what is mindset?’ Very basically, mindset is the set of beliefs you hold about yourself, your ability, your personality. Your mindset will be influenced by many factors including your childhood, your environment, your society and your peers. People tend to either have: – a fixed mindset – a growth mindset Fixed Mindset: People with a fixed mindset believe that their ability is set. They have a certain amount of intelligence and talent and nothing can change that. People in this mindset worry about their traits and how adequate they are. They don’t believe that anything can change their destiny. Growth Mindset: People with a growth mindset see their qualities as things that can be developed through their dedication and effort. Of course they’re happy if they are naturally intelligent or talented, but that’s just the starting point. They understand that no one has ever accomplished great things—not Mozart, Darwin, or Michael Jordan—without years of passionate practice and learning. Here are just a few ways in which these two mindsets can effect you in your life: Fixed Mindset: Avoids challenges Gives up easily Sees their efforts as fruitless ‘it’ll never work’ Ignores useful feedback and takes it personally Feels threatened by the success of others Growth Mindset: Embraces challenges Persists in the face of setbacks Sees effort as the path to success Learns from criticism Finds lessons in the success of others
I don’t believe that ANYONE with a fixed mindset can realise their full potential on this planet. It’s just not possible. HOWEVER I do believe (and I see this happen all the time with my clients) that you can change from a fixed to a growth mindset.
At the heart of what makes the “growth mindset” so winsome, is that it creates a passion for learning rather than a hunger for approval.
